Bottom line

The Pittsburgh Mini-Tire Changer, Harbor Freight item 58920, is stated for 4 to 10 in. rims and named for ATVs, golf carts and other off-highway vehicles. It is 16 in. tall, has a 90-day warranty and includes bead breaker handles, a mount/demount tool, a centering cone and nylon spacers. It is not in our selection. For rims of 8 in. and larger on cars and trailers, the full-size Pittsburgh changer or a floor-post changer is the documented tool.

The mini tire changer is the small sibling of the Pittsburgh manual tire changer, the reference machine among floor-post changers. This page describes it from Harbor Freight's product page. Its owner's manual could not be opened from our location, so nothing here comes from that manual, and we have run no trials with the tool. We earn nothing when you buy it at Harbor Freight.

Short verdict

For rims of 4 to 10 in., the Pittsburgh Mini-Tire Changer is the best-documented tool sold under the name mini tire changer, because a retailer with its own brand states the range and the contents. It is the wrong tool for car wheels, for trailer wheels above 10 in., and for anyone without a Harbor Freight store or delivery option.

Harbor Freight notes that specifications are approximate and subject to change. The last row matters: a rim diameter without a tire width leaves the wide, stiff ATV tire open.

For whom, and for whom not

Speaks for it

  • Rims from 4 to 10 in.: ATV, golf cart and similar off-highway wheels, by the product page
  • Complete for its job: bead breaker handles, mount/demount tool, centering cone and spacers are in the box
  • Small and light enough to store on a shelf: 16 in. tall, about 15 lb shipping weight
  • Can be seen in a store before buying

Speaks against it

  • Stops at 10 in. rims: no car wheels and no larger trailer wheels
  • No stated tire width; stiff, wide ATV tires may need a separate bead breaker
  • The product page does not say how it is fixed while you work
  • 90-day warranty
  • Sold by Harbor Freight only

The ranges overlap only at 8 to 10 in. The full-size machine is described on the page about the Harbor Freight tire changer. For rims under 8 in., only the mini changer reaches.

Everyday use: what can and cannot be said

Because the manual was not available to us, this page gives no step-by-step instructions for the machine. Three points hold regardless of the tool:

  • Lubricate. Use a commercially available bead lubricant on both beads and the rim; see tire mounting lube.
  • Inflation limits. Read the maximum pressure molded on the sidewall before inflating. To seat beads, the tire makers' limit is never more than 40 psi. If the beads are not seated at 40 psi, deflate completely, reposition the tire on the rim, relubricate and reinflate. The procedure is under how to seat a tire bead.
  • Stiff beads. If the bead breaker handles do not move a wide ATV tire, a dedicated tool is the next step, not more force. The types are compared under tire bead breakers, and Harbor Freight's own are on the page about Harbor Freight bead breakers.

Use the machine with the parts it comes with. For the full-size Pittsburgh changer, the copy of the owner's manual on ManualsLib says to use it only with the included accessories and not to modify it; expect the mini changer's manual to set its own rules, and read them before adding anything.

Every column here is labeled “Seller data only”: the figures come from Amazon listings alone, and none of these products is a pick.

The MOTOOS changer* (paid link) carries the same listed range under a brand name, in the mid-range price class. For both, the upper end of the range is a seller statement without a manual we could read; buy them for small rims. The whole field, including hand-held tools that only use the name, is sorted on the page about mini tire changers.

Straight answers

Does Harbor Freight sell an ATV tire changer?

Yes, the Pittsburgh Mini-Tire Changer, item 58920. Its product page names ATVs, golf carts and other off-highway vehicles and states a capacity of 4 to 10 in. rim diameter. ATV wheels with rims above 10 in. are outside that figure, and the page says nothing about tire width or sidewall stiffness. For stiff ATV beads a separate bead breaker can be the tool that decides the job.

Can the Harbor Freight mini tire changer do lawn mower tires?

The product page does not name lawn mowers or garden tractors; it names ATVs, golf carts and other off-highway vehicles. What it does state is the rim diameter, 4 to 10 in. On a small tire marked like 15x6.00-6, the last number is the rim diameter in inches. If that number is between 4 and 10, the wheel is inside the stated range; whether the tool suits your tire is not documented beyond that.

How do you use the Harbor Freight mini tire changer?

Follow its owner's manual, which we have not read. From the list of included parts the order of work is the usual one: deflate the tire, break both beads with the bead breaker handles, hold the wheel with the centering cone, and take the tire off and put the new one on with the mount/demount tool. Lubricate the beads, never go beyond 40 psi to seat them, and never above the maximum pressure molded on the sidewall.

Does the mini tire changer have to be bolted down?

The product page does not say how the machine is fixed, and we could not read the manual. Any tool you pull and push on has to be held somehow. For the full-size Pittsburgh changer, the copy of its owner's manual on ManualsLib requires mounting to the floor; that statement belongs to that machine and is not a statement about the mini changer.

Is there a Harbor Freight mini tire changer coupon?

Harbor Freight runs changing coupons and member offers, and we print neither prices nor offers because they are out of date within days. Check the product page or your store.
