Bottom line
The Maddox Manual Bead Breaker (item 58918) is a 10 lb steel clamp tool with a screw-action foot for tires up to 14 ply and rims up to 42 in.; Harbor Freight recommends it for steel wheels and says it may damage aluminum alloy wheels. The Pittsburgh Bead Breaker (item 58769) is a floor lever with a wide base. Both are sold by Harbor Freight only. On Amazon, screw-driven clamp tools from VEVOR and BeadBuster work on the Maddox principle; we list no lever stand there.
AI-generatedSearches for a Harbor Freight bead breaker mean one of two tools that work in different ways. This page describes both from Harbor Freight's product pages. We have not read their owner's manuals and have run no trials with them. We earn nothing when you buy at Harbor Freight; the Amazon products further down are alternatives.
Short verdict
The Maddox Manual Bead Breaker is the tool for heavy tires on steel wheels, from farm equipment down to ATVs. The Pittsburgh Bead Breaker is the lever stand for car and light truck tires on wheels without extra bead retention. With aluminum alloy wheels, read the limits below first.

Maddox Manual Bead Breaker, item 58918
The Maddox is a clamp tool. According to the product page it clamps securely to the rim, and a screw-action foot applies the force that unseats the bead. The page describes it for heavy agricultural machinery and says the compact design also suits smaller ATV tires.
Its clearest limit is the wheel material: Harbor Freight recommends it for steel wheels and says it may cause damage to aluminum alloy wheels. A hex wrench is required and sold separately. Like every bead breaker it does the first step only; the tire still has to be levered off.
Pittsburgh Bead Breaker, item 58769
The Pittsburgh is a lever stand. The product page describes an extra-long arm that separates the bead from the rim and a wide base that prevents tipping while in use. It gives a wheel diameter of 16 in. through 18 in. for cars and light trucks and also names motorcycle and ATV tires. It does not give a tire width or a lower limit, so compare the tool with your wheels in the store.
Harbor Freight does not recommend it for wheels with additional bead retention and does not explain which wheels are meant; we will not guess. The page also does not say whether the stand is fixed to the floor. For low-profile tires, the tire makers ask for equipment designed for low aspect ratio, high performance tires and wheels, and that is not a hand lever.
The swan neck tool and the built-in bead breakers
Harbor Freight's bead breaker category also lists a tire bead breaker with swan neck. Its product page could not be opened from our location, so we state no specifications.
Two Harbor Freight changers break beads without a separate tool. The Pittsburgh manual tire changer has a bead-breaker arm near the floor for 8 to 16 in. wheels; see the page on the Harbor Freight tire changer. The Pittsburgh Mini-Tire Changer for 4 to 10 in. rims comes with two bead breaker handles; see the Harbor Freight mini tire changer.
Amazon equivalents
Pittsburgh and Maddox are Harbor Freight house brands and are not in our selection. The tools below are bead breakers of the same types from makers who publish their specifications, not the same products.
VEVOR
VEVOR Clamp Bead Breaker (padded)
A clamp-type bead breaker: a wrench sets the padded front foot on the rim, then a drive screw pushes a second foot against the bead.
Why here: A clamp-type bead breaker on the same principle as the Maddox: a wrench sets the front foot on the rim and a drive screw pushes the bead off. Its maker says the rubber pad on the front foot is meant to protect aluminum wheels.
Best for: Breaking beads on ATV, UTV, tractor and trailer wheels before the tire is levered off by hand.

- Weight
- 11.5 lb
- Size
- 9.8 x 5.9 x 4.7 in.

What it does well
- Rubber pad on the front foot, meant to protect aluminum wheels (manufacturer)
- Compact: 9.8 x 5.9 x 4.7 in. and 11.5 lb in the maker's specifications; no stand and no anchoring
- Driven with an open-end wrench, an impact wrench or an air ratchet, according to the maker; no lever work
Where it falls short
- Breaks the bead only; the tire still has to be levered off
- The maker's page names no wrench as included: you supply the tool that turns the screws
- The maker states 38 to 42 in. as tire size without explaining it; compare the tool with your wheel before ordering
- The maker's own page gives two different weights (5.2 kg in the specifications, 5.5 kg in the text)

- No Amazon counterpart to the Pittsburgh lever stand: we found no lever stand on Amazon whose data we could check, so none is listed.
- The compact clamp tool with published limits: the BeadBuster XB-450i* (paid link) also clamps onto the rim and drives a ram between rim and bead with a wrench. According to its maker it is for one-piece wheels with tires up to 32 in. tall and has a padded clamp arm; 7 and 8 in. ATV rims need a separate spacer. It sits in the premium price class; see BeadBuster.
- For pickup and small tractor tires that stay on the vehicle: the VEVOR slide hammer* (paid link) is a striking tool with a wedge tip. More on that type under slide hammer bead breakers.
All hand-operated types are compared under manual bead breakers, the choice by tire type under tire bead breakers.
Using either tool
The manual in the box comes first. For every bead breaker: let all the air out before the tool touches the tire, and lubricate the bead with a commercially available bead lubricant; the tire makers rule out silicone, petroleum and solvent-based products. The steps are on the page how to break a tire bead.
When the new tire goes on, the limit for inflation applies: never more than 40 psi to seat beads. If the beads are not seated at 40 psi, deflate completely, reposition the tire on the rim, relubricate and reinflate. The procedure is under how to seat a tire bead.

Straight answers
Does Harbor Freight sell tire bead breakers?
Yes. When we looked in October 2026, the bead breaker category of harborfreight.com listed three products: the Maddox Manual Bead Breaker, the Pittsburgh Bead Breaker and a tire bead breaker with swan neck. In addition, the Pittsburgh manual tire changer has a bead-breaker arm built in, and the Pittsburgh Mini-Tire Changer comes with two bead breaker handles. All are house-brand or store products.
Is the Maddox manual bead breaker good for aluminum wheels?
Harbor Freight's own product page answers that: the tool is recommended for use on steel wheels and may cause damage to aluminum alloy wheels. It clamps to the rim to apply its force, so the contact is metal on rim. For alloy wheels, look at tools whose makers describe padding, and expect that no manual tool comes with a promise of a mark-free result.
Does Harbor Freight sell a slide hammer bead breaker?
We did not find one. The bead breaker category of harborfreight.com showed the Maddox clamp tool, the Pittsburgh lever stand and a swan neck tool when we looked in October 2026, and no slide hammer. Assortments change, so check the store's site. On Amazon, the VEVOR slide hammer bead breaker is the documented tool of that type; it is a striking tool for pickup and small tractor tires.
Which Harbor Freight bead breaker is for tractor tires?
By the product pages, the Maddox tool is the one aimed at heavy tires: Harbor Freight states tires up to 14 ply and rims up to 42 in. in diameter and names heavy agricultural machinery as well as smaller ATV tires. The Pittsburgh lever stand is described for automobile, light truck, motorcycle and ATV tires. We have not read either manual.
What tool do I need to operate the Maddox bead breaker?
According to the product page it is operated with a breaker bar, a ratchet wrench or an adjustable wrench. The page also notes a hex wrench that is required and sold separately. Check the manual in the box for the sizes before you start; we have not read it.
